Needle felted Applique on wool blanket
fabric
You will need:
A design for appliqué, Creswick
wool blanket fabric, Alpaca or merino blanket scraps, or Creswick
alpaca strips for the applique, Other random fibres such as Cornelli
yarn, alpaca
or merino fibre, Creswick
Craft needle felting tool and brush
• Use Creswick blanket pieces as the base for needle felting appliqué.
Any appliqué design could be used to
embellish your piece of wool blanket, so look for these or design your
own by first drawing the design on paper.
Cut patterns of the various parts used in the design, then cut out your
fabric pieces as needed.
• Cornelli yarn, wool or alpaca fibre or other wool or alpaca
fabric scraps can all be used as embellishments in
the design – even the smallest amount can become a part of an
appliqué design. A basic appliqué design could
be flowers, or geometric shapes, for example and these would most likely
overlap in places.
• Start with the pieces that form the background of your design.
Place these into position then felt these into
place using the felting tool and brush. Decide what pieces should now
be layered to overlap these background
pieces and felt these pieces into place, then continue with more layers
as you wish.
• When felting through several fabric layers be sure the layers
are secure as extra felting may be needed to
hold them in place. Remember to leave a seam allowance free if you intend
to sew your finished piece into a
cushion.
• Larger appliquéd blanket pieces make excellent quilts
and throws.
